Running head: FALSE MEMORIES AND DIVIDED ATTENTION Dividing Attention Lowers Children’s, but Increases Adults’ False Memories

چکیده
The present study examined the impact of divided attention on children’s and adults’ neutral and negative true and false memories in a standard DRM paradigm. Children (7and 11-year-olds; n = 126) and adults (n = 52) received 5 neutral and 5 negative DRM word lists where half of each group received a divided attention task. The results showed that divided attention affected children’s and adults’ false memory levels differently, but did not alter true memory differently. Specifically, our results revealed a developmental shift in that divided attention lowered children’s false memory rates, but increased adults’ false memory rates, regardless of the nature of the material (i.e., neutral or negative). Our study indicates that manipulations that target conscious processing (e.g., divided attention) result in marked qualitative and quantitative differences between children’s and adults’ false memories but not true memories.

Some of theories which try to explain the mechanisms underlying false memory phenomenon postulate that false memories are due to existence of semantic relations between studied items which increase memory's vulnerability to this kind of distortion. Thus, the aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of shifting attention away from semantic relations among words in associative lists...
متن کاملThe corrective effects of warning on false memories in the DRM paradigm are limited to full attention conditions.
Effects of attention control and forewarning on the activation and monitoring of experimentally induced false memories in the Deese/Roediger-McDermott paradigm were investigated in a young adult sample (N=77). We found that reducing the degree of attention during encoding led to a decrease in veridical recall and an increase in non-presented critical lure intrusions. This effect could not be co...
متن کاملThe Effects of Feedback on Memory Strategies of Younger and Older Adults
Existing literature suggests that feedback could effectively reduce false memories in younger adults. However, it is unclear whether memory performance in older adults also might be affected by feedback. The current study tested the hypothesis that older adults can use immediate feedback to adjust their memory strategy, similar to younger adults, but after feedback is removed, older adults may ...
متن کاملDivided attention during retrieval suppresses false recognition in confabulation.
The present research tested the hypothesis that false recognition in confabulating patients results, at least in part, from sustained processing of irrelevant information about test items. Thus, we predicted that false recognition would be reduced if cognitive resources available for such a processing are experimentally reduced. Two experiments provided evidence consistent with this proposal. I...
